Although literary critics have tended to praise the unique in literary characterization, many authors have employed the stereotyped character successfully. Stereotypical characters in literature are great vehicles for expressing an author's philosophy on life.

What are Yahoos?

In Book 4 of Jonathan Swift's satirical novel, Gulliver's Travels, the Yahoos are simian beasts that come to represent Swift's stereotypical view of humanity.

Yahoos smell, are hairy, and inhumane. In one scene, Gulliver, friendly and adventurous, tries to communicate with the Yahoos. Instead of being civil with him, they shake an apple tree under his head and throw their feces at him. Swift is conveying the idea that Yahoos represents humans. Even today, although it may seem like the human race has evolved, there is still worldwide fighting and humans still behave like Yahoos.
