On 4 February, 1986, the U.S. Postal Service added another collectible postage stamp to its Black Heritage commemorative stamps series with their dedication of the first class 22-cent Sojourner Truth stamp. Truth appears on the 9th stamp in the popular Black Heritage stamp series.
The Life of Sojourner Truth
According to the Women in History web site, Isabella Baumfree, later known as Sojourner Truth, was born into slavery in 1797, in Ulster County, New York.
Isabella Baumfree was first sold at the age of 9, then sold twice more by the age of 13. In 1815, Isabella bore a child named Diana. In 1817, Isabella was forced into marriage with a slave named Thomas, with whom she bore four children: Peter (1822), James (unknown, died young), Elizabeth (1825), and Sophia (1826).
